Resources for Women offers free limited first trimester obstetrical ultrasounds* to verify pregnancy viability. Ultrasound scans are performed by a Registered Nurse (RN) trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound or a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).
To qualify for an ultrasound at Resources for Women, certain criteria determined by our Medical Director apply, including an initial consultation and pregnancy test. Although we often have ample appointment slots, the initial consultation and ultrasound will involve two separate visits.
What will it tell me?
Gestational Age: How far along am I? Gestational age is determined by the date of a woman's last menstrual period. Some women are unsure about the date of their last menstrual period. An ultrasound can measure the fetus and help determine accurate dating.
Heart-rate: Is my pregnancy viable? During the scan, the heart-rate will be measured to help determine if the pregnancy is progressing. We do not use Doppler technology at our facility, due to health concerns.
Implantation: Did the embryo implant into the uterus correctly? Sometimes a pregnancy will develop outside of the uterus, resulting in an ectopic pregnancy which requires immediate medical attention.
* Ultrasound scans are used to confirm the presence of a viable, uterine pregnancy. We do not use ultrasound to determine gender or diagnose abnormalities. Eligibility criteria apply.
