How Does Ultrasound Work?

An ultrasound produces high-frequency sound waves that bounce back off the observed tissue, interpret these echoes, and create an image on a screen.

Medical News Today says, “Ultrasound is sound that travels through soft tissue and fluids, but it bounces back, or echoes, off denser surfaces. This is how it creates an image.”

What Are Ultrasounds Used For?

Ultrasounds are very useful for diagnosing, investigating, and examining body tissues. Early discovery of an ectopic pregnancy is vital to protect a woman’s wellness. Thankfully, ultrasound helps verify pregnancy placement and can provide peace of mind.

Gestational age is determined by the date of a woman’s last menstrual period. Some women are unsure about the date of their last menstrual period. An ultrasound can measure the fetus and help determine accurate dating.

Is your pregnancy viable? During the scan, the heart rate is measured to help determine if the pregnancy is progressing. We do not use Doppler technology at our facility due to health concerns.

*Ultrasound scans confirm the presence of a viable uterine pregnancy. At Resources for Women, we do not use an ultrasound to determine gender or diagnose abnormalities. Eligibility criteria apply.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that takes place outside the uterus. This is not a viable pregnancy and will not have the necessary components to be sustained. Ectopic pregnancies directly threaten a woman’s health and must be medically treated to avoid complications.

An ultrasound is important because if an ectopic pregnancy is present, immediate medical intervention may be required for the health and safety of the woman.

Receive A Free Ultrasound

Resources for Women offers free limited first trimester obstetrical ultrasounds* to verify pregnancy viability. Ultrasound scans are performed by a Registered Nurse (RN) trained in limited obstetrical ultrasound or a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

To qualify for an ultrasound at Resources for Women, certain criteria determined by our Medical Director apply, including an initial consultation and pregnancy test. Although we often have ample appointment slots, the initial consultation and ultrasound will involve two separate visits.
